Integrating ICT into teaching and learning mathematics

Rosamund Sutherland

The framework is similar to that presented yesterday, but the focus is on maths. Sutherland has herself taught mathematics earlier.

Mathematical tools can be algorithms, solving equations, creative/productive tools etc, and they all go into the learning of maths. Teachers are even more key in the case of mathematics. Which tools do we need to know in mathematics, what is necessary non-digital tools? Sketch and plot using graph paper is. But finding a square root is not. This is continuously changing, and we need to discuss this all the time. The same goes for symbols and material objects like rulers. Spreadsheets represent a versatile tool that could be used in several exciting ways.

As a teacher you need to be constantly aware of any analogues you introduce to the students, they must not be possible to misinterpret.

Students build on previous learning, both in school and at home.

To start using ICT in the classroom requires a lot of support. Also, you need to choose a focused area and a class where you are comfortable trying out new things.

Talks about an example from primary school, where they introduced data handling to year 4. Problem: «Does every packet of Smarties contain the same number of every colour?» Using Ecxel. The pupils were encouraged to teach each other how they made charts and so on.

Goes into the design process used to develop use of ICT. Group of teachers working together, involving a person from local university. The group of teachers design a lesson, one teaches it and is filmed, and they can discuss this video together afterwards.

There is a tension between informal and formal knowledge. I.e. measurement and proof.

When I initially left a comment I seem to have clicked on the -Notify me when new comments are added- checkbox and from now on each time a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment.
There has to be a means you can remove me from that service?
    Appreciate it!
