Stephanie Hamilton, Apple Education
31 years in education before joining Apple. The presentation comes from asking the question why?
Education doesn’t really change very much, compared to the rest of the world. We are preparing our students for a world that no longer exists. There is change in technology. (It is only called technology if it was invented after you were born. ;-)) Website that talks about obsolete skills, i.e. getting up and turn the channel switch on the tv… The students hav e time shift expectations, they have tivo – the opporltunity to watch what they want WHEN they want, it is not scheduled in the same way as before. What has tis done to the expectations the students have to schools?
The change now is to a multi-touch interface (iPhone etc).
Changes in connectivity – from unconnected to 24h connection. Communication was through closed systems, not web. The tecnologic world was not available to others than geeks. Distance equals bandwith, not distance. You can do any kind of work anywhere.
The most dramatic change is the change in content. Digital natives, digital learners etc. Previously the teachers were the gatekeepers of knowledge, now the pupils have access to the internet… The struggle to implement technology in the classroom might be driven by the fear to loose control, to have students knowing more than you. You can no longer be a teacher of content, but of context. 55 Universities in US are producing free academic coursework at iTunes U, and MIT has all the coursework free online. Trying to stop technology in education is like trying to hold back a tsunami with your hand.
Again back to the fact that if we ask questions that the students can cheat their way to an answer, we are asking the wrong questions. Bring the tecnologies in to the classrom, and use it!

When you have teh world in your pocket, it really changes the way the world is. If we can’t learn history for the significance of it – we are doomed to repeat it. (Ex. when was the battle of Hastings is not relevant, WHY is relevant). Are we putting our ikids in aeroplanes everyday? If you are lucky, the trip will be relevant and enjoyable. If not, you’ll be able to resume your life in 3-5 hours. How to we make the students free?
Tecnology is no longer a tool, it is an environment! (Tenker tilbake på foredrag om IKT i lærerutdanningen i går, der en mente at den digitale kompetansen ikke er en egen kompetanse, bare en måte å oppnå de andre på.)
21st century requires and rewards. Comparison between what the society requires and what we require from students in schools. We teach very discrete skills, and not the intertwined skills in the real world. In school we teach failure, we do not teach mastering. The «good» students do not want to take risks and think for themselves, they want to know the right answer.
One of the reasons for apples success the last 5 yeras is because the engineers and the designers work closely together, the design is linked to the technology and vice versa.
How do you prepare students for a career that does not exist today? They have to be creaters of content, not consumers. This entire generation do this, they live this life outside school, and we need to bring that work into the classroom. Why should we pay attention to VR? If we don’t understant what the children are doing you cannot possibly understand the world they live in!

The students need to be able to create mashups of the curriculum.
Schools who are doing the right thing for teaching is doing the technology different from businesses. Learning is about opening minds, being creative, collaborating. We must design for a user-centered system. A sand box. IT’s job is to maintain the barriers around the sand box.
